
A Journey to Safe, Natural Pain Relief with Medical Marijuana
For many years, I pushed my body to its limits in the wrestling ring. As a pro wrestler without health insurance (this was before the Affordable Care Act/ Obamacare), wrestling three to four times a week was both a passion and a livelihood, but it came with a cost. Eight and a half years of constant action took a toll on my body. While I took a few months off in 2005, otherwise, I never stopped. Wrestling was what I did. However, by 2008, after a hard fall during a missed dive, I found myself struggling with severe pain. I turned to opioid painkillers, and it seemed like the only option at the time.
But opioids can be dangerous. I wasn’t prepared for how quickly they took control of my life. I started depending on them, mixing them with other substances just to numb the constant pain. Over time, I noticed how these pills were changing me. I was snapping at promoters, distancing myself from the people around me, and becoming someone I didn’t recognize. Physically, mentally, and even financially, I was falling apart. Wrestling through that pain wasn’t sustainable. Finally, by the fall of 2009, I reached a breaking point. I knew I needed another solution—something safer, something that could bring me back to who I was.
That’s when I learned about California’s medical marijuana program. This was back when dispensaries were still a new concept, but they represented a chance to reclaim my life. I went to see Dr. Sonia Patel in Hollywood and received my recommendation, and it changed everything for me. Medical marijuana helped me step away from the pills that had nearly cost me everything. It saved my life by providing relief without the risks and dependencies of opioids, especially today, with the dangers of fentanyl.
